| Maker: Unattributed Maker Pattern:Unidentified Pattern Loving Cup c1835 A large mug with two handles is usually known as a loving cup, as it could be passed from hand to hand for mutual toasts or in the case of a loving couple the liquid contents could be shared. This mug is unusual partly because of its size, but also because it bears the measure of its contents: QUART. The Weights and Measures Act of 1824 established the Imperial standards for measuring quantities and thereafter mugs and jugs conforming to the new standard were made with the words Imperial Gallon or Imperial Quart printed on them and often accompanied by the Royal Coat of Arms. This mug does not quite have that official air as it is just plain QUART, although that is a generous measure of love and perhaps was for use in a rustic inn or tavern of its day.
The floral design goes all the way round the outside of the mug and the handles are decorated, but the interior is plain white. A little light crazing otherwise fine condition. Dimensions: 13 cm diameter, 11.5 cm high / 5 ins diameter, 4.5 ins high

| Maker: Unattributed Maker Pattern:Unidentified Pattern Tankard c1820 A lovely large traditional tankard, holding a full quart of ale or cider. There is a beautiful broad floral border design round the neck, both inside and out, and the main scene is a rather Middle Eastern river scene, with a family in the foreground, fallen classical pillar to the left, ruin of a classical building to the right and hills with temples in the background. Despite extensive research we have not identified this pattern.
The glaze is crazed and has taken up some staining, especially internally and underneath. The foot rim has had a knock, which has left a partial unsprung chip and there is a small manufacturing fault in the glaze. Overall, though it is good condition and the glaze is bright.
