What a find! A virtually perfect early wash basin, complete with original brass fittings and plug on short chain (not illustrated). It is decorated in the Lanercost Priory pattern, which has been attributed to Enoch Wood (either the Wood & Caldwell partnership or its successor Enoch Wood & Sons) of Burslem. This basin has a different border design to that found on Lanercost Priory tableware, but a wider border was needed here, because of the size of the item.
Lanercost Priory is in Cumberland, about 11 miles north-east of Carlisle. Founded in the 12th Century it is notable for being built from stone taken from Hadrian's Wall.
This basin is suitable for use, requiring only a sympathetic plumber and joiner to fit it as a working basin. Dimensions given are overall and there is a 0.75" 2cm lip on the basin allowing it to fit into an aperture of 12.25" 31cm diameter.
There is a tiny ding or nick near the plug hole (caused by plug?) and another on the outer rim. Both are really minor and overall this is almost as it would have been when it left Woods pottery over 175 years ago.
