Meat Dish or Platter Tiger Hunt c1825
The scene on this platter was taken from aquatints in Oriental Field Sports, Wild Sports of the East written by Capt Thomas Williamson, illustrated by Samuel Howitt and first published in monthly instalments by Edward Orme of Bond Street, London commencing 4 June 1805. Josiah Spode drew inspiration from the same publication for his multi-scene Indian Sporting series.
The original source engravings for this Tiger Hunt were "Chasing a Tiger across a River" and "A Tiger Hunted by Wild Dogs", both of which are reproduced in Antique Blue and White Spode by Sydney B Williams alongside a 12" Tiger Hunt platter, which had been purchased in India around 1900. Williams suggested Herculaneum of Liverpool as a possible maker.
There are a few minor manufacturing blemishes with some surface scratching around the outer bowl and a tiny flake of glaze missing on one side. At one end there is a little wear, but overall this is in excellent condition with the face bright and clean.

No backstamp.
There is a small hairline to the rim and pitting to the face and a little to the rim.

Plate Death of the Bear c1820
Oriental Sports is a copy of Spode's Indian Sporting Series. A version is known made by Edward Challinor, who briefly operated the Overhouse Works at Burslem in the early 1820s, but this plate is from another version, which has a slightly different backstamp to pieces identified as being by Challinor. The scene is Death of the Bear.
Backstamp: Thistle and rose cartouche, with crown above and ORIENTAL SPORTS within banner.
Fine crazing with just a little discolouration on the back and some surface scratching otherwise excellent condition.

Provenance: The personal collection of Gresham Copeland, passing by descent to his son Robert Copeland. Collection identification label on back AGC 311.
The glaze is finely crazed and there is a tight hairline running in from the rim for 1.5" 3.5cm at 11 o'clock. Otherwise fine.

Lovely jug with same scene either side of the body.
No backstamp.
Crazed with a little wear and discolouration underneath and a small firing fault by the lower handle join.

Lovely shape of jug with unusual border.
No backstamp.
Crazed with a little light discolouration around the foot and inside also a couple of very minor firing faults inside, overall a lovely jug.

Lovely mug with continuous pattern around the body and floral border pattern around the inside rim.
No backstamp.
Light all over crazing with just a little minor wear to the rim otherwise excellent condition.
