Plate Death of the Bear c1820
Oriental Sports is a copy of Spode's Indian Sporting Series. A version is known made by Edward Challinor, who briefly operated the Overhouse Works at Burslem in the early 1820s, but this plate is from another version, which has a slightly different backstamp to pieces identified as being by Challinor. The scene is Death of the Bear. Backstamp: Thistle and rose cartouche, with crown above and ORIENTAL SPORTS within banner. Fine crazing with just a little discolouration on the back and some surface scratching otherwise excellent condition.

Provenance: The personal collection of Gresham Copeland, passing by descent to his son Robert Copeland. Collection identification label on back AGC 311. The glaze is finely crazed and there is a tight hairline running in from the rim for 1.5" 3.5cm at 11 o'clock. Otherwise fine.
