Tray Serving with Handle c1800
Pretty small tray with canted sides and small loop handle each end. This early Chinoiserie design is also known as Boy on a Buffalo. It has been the subject of much research over the years and Chinese original porcelain from which it was derived has been identified. Buffalo was made by several English makers, of whom a few have been identified, and different details between various versions, allow most to be grouped into one of 5 different variants. However, this example fits none of them and appears to be variant 6! There is no backstamp. The glaze is generally sound although there is some crazing to rim border, especially at the corners, where there is a touch of associated staining. There is some rubbing to the glaze on the handles and rim, mainly on the corners. The three stilt marks are fairly prominent on the face. No real damage and in lovely condition. A rare example of early pearlware.
