Jug or Pitcher c1840s
A historic jug bearing the arms and motto of the Loyal Order of Ancient Shepherds, one of many friendly or mutual aid societies formed in the 19th century to help members financially in times of hardship due to illness or death. Founded in Ashton-under-Lyne in Lancashire on Christmas Day, 1826, its name was originally Ashton Unity, later changing to the Loyal Order of Ancient Shepherds. The Latin motto Christis Noster Pastor translates as Christ Our Shepherd. These jugs may have been made for use by the Shepherds or to mark membership of the Order. Occasionally they are found printed with a member's name and date of joining. No backstamp. Light all over crazing with just a hint of discolouration and some wear to the spout. There is also a little wear and a small chip to the base of the handle. Elsewhere a possible few very small hairlines which do not go through to the inside of the jug. Overall a stunning piece.
Dimensions: 0.2 ltr, 12.5 cm high / 2 pint, 5 ins high
