John Turner of Lane End, Longton, Staffordshire was one of the first potters to make blue-printed wares. He was active from 1759 to 1792 and succeeded by his sons William and John, who continued until the factory closed in 1829.
The Stag pattern was one of Turner's earliest blue-printed designs, created in the fashonable chinoiserie style, line engraved and printed in a dark blue.
This plate is in stunning condition, with just one miniscule nick to the rim, but the glaze is sound and as bright and clean as the day it was made. We doubt that you will find a better example of such an early piece. It is finely potted and light to the touch. Pure history!
