Maker: Stubbs  Pattern:Spread Eagle Border Series
Plate Fair Mount near Philadelphia c1830
Made by Joseph Stubbs of Longport, Staffordshire, active 1822 to 1834. The view is one of a series and depicts the Dam and Waterworks and Schuylkill buildings at Fairmount, Philadelphia. Backstamp: blue printed oval with Fair Mount near Philadelphia. Provenance: The Grant-Davidson Collection No 160 and bears identifying label. A interesting example from a Collection of world renown. The three stilt marks on the front are rather prominent and a short area on the rim has rough glaze and a couple of small flakes of glaze missing, probably the result of touching another plate in the kiln. Overall though excellent condition and printed in a luscious deep blue. The plate sits flat on the table, but the rim has warped in firing and between 12 o'clock and 3 o'clock is quite elevated in relation to the remainder of the rim.
Dimensions: 26 cm / 10.25 ins
