Maker: Spode  Pattern:Rose Wreath lilac
Sponge Dish c1860
This sponge dish is printed in a luscious lilac, which is almost flow in appearance. Rose Wreath design was registered on 9 September 1847 and the factory pattern number was 7803, introduced in 1848. In beautiful condition, with just a minor glaze blemish inside, this dish has two side handles and the separate drainer that fits inside. The dish is decorated both inside and out and the drainer is unusually fully decorated on both sides. It would be possible to use the drainer upside down and the dish could hold pot-purri. Absolutely delightful and pretty piece. Printed backstamp in lilac Copeland late Spode, with the diamond lozenge registration mark for 9 September 1847 and the rare impressed mark of the Copeland family crest, which is believed to have been impressed about 1860 by a member of the family on pieces he had made personally.
