| Maker: Spode Pattern:Byron Views green Comport c1835 The three volume work Landscape and Portrait Illustrations to the Life and Works of Lord Byron was issued in 1832-1834 and published by John Murray, who also published Byron's works. The engravings were by Edward and William Finden and based on paintings by well known contemporary artists such as Clarkson, Stanfield, Fielding and Turner. It was a work that epitomised the Grand Tour and illustrated places in Europe associated with the famous poet. The engravers at Spode were quick to seize upon these inspired engravings and the Byron Views series was one of the first designs introduced by Copeland & Garrett, as they succeeded the Spode family in 1833. The scenes are finely engraved and printed and have a romanticism that catches the spirit of the age and the intrinsic charm of each scene. The design was produced in blue, brown and as here in green printed versions.
This dramatic comport or tazza, would have formed the centre piece of a dessert service and you can imagine it piled high with fruit topped off with a pineapple. Inside the bowl is decorated with Bologna and round the outside Tivoli. It is a delightful shape with wavy and moulded rim. There are a few very minor glaze blemishes and some crazing to the glaze under the foot, but overall in superb condition. Two green printed backstamps Copeland & Garrett Late Spode Bologna and the other with Tivoli and impressed Copeland & Garrett Late Spode 4.
