Ewer c1870
This design was registered by Venables & Baines of Burslem on 17 February 1852 and it was also made by Edward Challinor of Fenton Stone Works, High Street, Lane Delph, Fenton. They both called the design Union. Under the pattern name Rural the same design was produced succesively at the Callands and Ynysmeudwy Potteries and South Wales Pottery at Llanelly in Wales. From the shape this ewer has been attributed to Ynysmeudwy or Llanelly. This is an attractive ewer - gorgeous shape and lovely pattern! The main scene is an interesting rural scene within an intricate foral border inset with vignettes around the rim. There has been an unfortunate joining of the transfer on one side of the jug, resulting in a headless horse! The ewer has light all over crazing with a little discolouration around the foot and to the handle, and there is a little wear to one side of the spout. Overall a lovely piece. There is no maker's backstamp.
