This is a magnificent platter in excellent condition with only a few signs of use and the glaze is sound and bright. This is an early example of Asiatic Pheasants and the lightness of the potting and quality of the print, bear out this early date. It really is a find and was made by William Smith of the Stafford Pottery, South Stockton in Yorkshire, who is best remembered for marking his wares Wedgwood or Wedgewood to achieve better sales until an injunction sought by the Josiah Wedgwood factory stopped him. The choice of Stafford as the name of his Pottery shows the extent of his marketing and desire to be associated with the famous Staffordshire Potteries. Impressed backstamp Stafford Pottery, South Stockton, which was used by Smith from 1825 to 1855.
