| Maker: Riley Pattern:Europa Meat Dish or Platter c1825 Made by John & Richard Riley of Nile Street and Hill Works, Burslem active 1796-1828. The scene in part is taken from Claude's painting Europa, which is now in the Royal Collection. It depicts Europa on the back of a tame bull, which form Zeus had taken to get close to her! She found him so gentle that she stayed on his back as he swam to Crete.
Backstamp: Riley's Semi-China.
Crazed with some discolouration although this is mainly on the back and surface scratching. There is also wear on the back and to the rim, the latter resulting in loss of glaze. Overall in spite of all this is a lovely dish.

| Maker: Riley Pattern:Europa Plate c1825 Made by John & Richard Riley of Nile Street and Hill Works, Burslem active 1796-1828. The scene in part at least is taken from Claude's painting Europa, which is now in the Royal Collection. It depicts Europa on the back of a tame bull, which form Zeus had taken to get close to her! She found him so gentle that she stayed on his back as he swam to Crete.
Blue printed backstamp of oval Garter with the words Riley's and Semi-China.
The glaze is finely crazed, with a little, light associated staining on the border at the bottom. The staining is greater on the back. There is wear and mottling to the rim and a small rim chip has been restored. Apparently a well used plate, although the face has survived the best of all. Overall clean and bright. Dimensions: 25.5 cm / 10 ins
