| Maker: Reed and Taylor Pattern:Floral Vase Meat Dish or Platter c1840 This appears to be a previously un-recorded pattern, which we have attributed to Reed & Taylor of Swillington Bridge Pottery, Yorkshire. Boldly printed in a strong, deep flow blue.
Backstamp: blue printed floral cartouche, with Floral Vase within. Impressed shield containing the words Opaque Granite China, with Lion and Unicorn as supporters. A similar backstamp was used by William Ridgway, but generally incorporates his initials. Wasters with this backstamp and no initials, have been found at the Swillington Bridge Pottery and the quality of the piece does not suggest a Ridgway origin.
The glaze on this platter is rather thick and "gritty" and there are a few places where it has not taken or there are blemishes. There is wear and rubbing in places round the rim, but overall good condition.
