Wine Cooler c1840
This is either a small wine cooler, in the style of a silver one or a large centre-piece bowl for fruit etc. as part of a dessert service. Whatever its original use it is an outstanding piece. We have seen only one other, ever! Standing on a round moulded foot the body is gently shaped, rising to a wavy flared rim. Beautifully patterned around the outside with wide floral border to the inside rim and pheasant pattern inside to the base.
It is in superb condition, with a minor rub to the end of one handle, otherwise nothing. Even the glaze is sound and bright, so rare in this design.
There is a typical blue printed cartouche for the maker's backstamp with the initials PW & Co for Podmore Walker & Co, who later claimed to be the original makers of Asiatic Pheasants and in 1860 changed their name to Wedgwood & Co. Their Asiatic Pheasants was always of the first quality.
This stunning piece is unique with its combination of rare shape and almost perfect quality.

There is a little light crazing to the glaze, a short discrete hairline on the rim and the odd glaze blemish, but frankly this is as near perfect as they get.
An impressed backstamp Wedgwood & Co with Erieshape and registered number for the shape for 21 June 1867. This was registered by E & D Chetwynd & Co, who were apparently agents for Wedgwood.

Made by Wedgwood and Company the successors to Podmore Walker who claimed to be the original makers of Asiatic Pheasants. Bright and clean condition. There is a small old rim chip to tureen, a few rubs and light stains from age mainly to the handles. The glaze is sound and not crazed. It really is a lovely piece.

Very pretty round tureen with side loop handles and cetnral loop handle to cover. The tureen has some discolouration and two small chips to the rim not noticeable when the cover is in situ'. It has light crazing and a little discolouration also to the handles. The cover has some small under rim chips and a small area where the transfer is slightly grey rather than blue (the result of thin glaze) and also has a little discolouration to the handle. As usual once all "written down" sounds much worse than it actually looks! This is a very pretty tureen. Impressed Wedgwood and Co.
