| Maker: Peake Pattern:Lierre Bowl c1861 This pretty bowl is decorated on the inside and outside with an ivy and floral border and a romantic scene in the centre. Attractive moulded side handles and broad fluting to the body. It would have started life as a covered vegetable dish, but is a decorative bowl in its own right. Its origins are enigmatic. There is a blue printed backstamp with J & J Peake, Newcastle, Staff round a oval containing D P C & Co and crossed swords, with the pattern name Lierre beneath. At the top is a registration diamond for 12 September 1861, when a design by J & J Peake of Newcastle is recorded in the registration records. J & J Peake are also recorded at Snow Hill, Shelton in 1851.
The glaze is crazed with some light associated staining, mainly in two areas below the central picture in the bowl, and there is a minor hairline in the rim.
