| Maker: Masons Pattern:Japan Basket blue with colour Jug or Pitcher c1830 Masons Patent Ironstone China large jug or pitcher, really more of a ewer, decorated in a traditional Japanese inspired design, which is sometimes known simply by the name Japan. Octagonal, with a magnificent serpent handle, this a Masons favourite known as Hydra or Antique shape.
In excellent condition, with only a few signs of use and wear, which are perhaps to be expected after 175 years.
Typical blue printed backstamp, with MASON'S over crown and drape, incorporating Patent Ironstone China. Also a rare impressed mark of a Star of Garter with Masons Granite China in the garter circle. See Godden's Guide to Ironstone page 101 for more on this rare mark.
The backstamps and use of the words Granite China suggest that this jug was made during the C J Mason & Co period, dating from about 1830. Dimensions: 3.5 ltr 23.5 cm high / 5.5 pints 9.25 ins high

No backstamp.
The decorative stand has a hairline, several small firing cracks and a small chip to the rim and the lustre is quite worn. The tureen has a couple of small firing cracks inside to the base and a little wear to the lustre otherwise in excellent condition. The cover is in excellent condition. | Maker: Masons Pattern:Japan Basket blue with colour Ewer c1825 Decorated with one of Mason's brightly coloured Japan designs, blue printed and hand coloured. This large hydra ewer or pitcher, with eight panels has the typical Mason's serpent handle.
In manufacture the handle lifted away from the body as it was fired, but is still firmly attached. There is another stress crack, which occured during manufacture, running down the "join" between two of the panels. This ewer is in excellent condition and the glaze is sound and bright.
