Maker: Herculaneum  Pattern:British Views Series
Pepper Pot Kings College Cambridge c1820
This pepper pot has one of the scenes from the British Views Series made by the Herculaneum Pottery of Liverpool. Depicted are the west end of the Chapel and part of Gibbs Building of King's College and the south range of Old Court and Old Bridge of Clare College, Cambridge and the picture is derived from the engraving Cambridge by J Walker, which appeared in the Copper Plate Magazine in 1793. The same scene appears on the sauce tureen in this series, which is also known as Cherub Medallion Series after the border design found on larger pieces. Pepper pots of this age are rare in any pattern and this pot or a similar one was featured in Friends of Blue Bulletins 86 and 87 January and Spring 1995. No backstamp. Light crazing with a small manufacturing fault to the foot which has lost a little glaze. To the top there is just a little pitting to the holes and a small vertical hairline to the body. Oh dear, sounds awful, but this is a fabulous and rare little piece.
Dimensions: 9.5 cm high / 3.75 ins high

Meat Dish or Platter with tree and well Oxford c1820
British Views was the factory name for this series of topographical scenes, although in modern times it has also been known as Cherub Medallion Border Series, from its distinctive border design. This is a majestic view of the City of Oxford seen in rural surroundings, with either the River Cherwell or Isis (Thames) curving round in the foreground and the spires of the historic university beyond. This platter has feet and a well, but no tree. Backstamp: impressed 20 over HERCULANEUM and blue printed cartouche with Oxford.
Dimensions: 51.5 x 42 cm / 20.5 x 16.5 ins
