Condiment Tray c1820
A lovely condiment or spice tray, which originally would have had five small lidded containers.
This view of Guys Cliffe is taken from Vol III of The Antiquarian and Topographical Cabinet by Storer and Greig, published 1808. Guy's Cliffe is a hamlet in the civil parish of Leek Wootton and Guy's Cliffe just outside Warwick. The Cliffe is a sandstone outcrop, which overlooks the River Avon, named after the 10th Century Guy of Warwick, who lived the life of a penitent in a cave in the Cliffe. Samuel Greatheed, MP for Coventry, bought the estate in 1751 and built a house in the Palladian style. His son Bertie extended the house in the early 1800s. It passed by descent into the Heber-Percy family, who sold it in 1946. During the 1950s the house began a slide into dereliction and today is a ruin.
The house and its setting are depicted in beautiful detail on the stand and the border consists of vignettes of the house and grounds.

Light all over crazing with some discolouration.

Condiment or Spice Set c1820
A rare and attractive condiment or spice set, consisting of four containers with scroll side handles and covers on a moulded and indented tray, with side handles. The fifth container is missing.
Henshall & Co were trading as Henshall, Williamson & Co by the time this set was made, but they are generally refered to as simply Henshall. Based at Longport, Staffordshire the partnerships spanned from 1792 to 1830. The house and its setting are depicted in beautiful detail on the stand and the border consists of vignettes of the house and grounds. Each container is decorated with the same view in miniature and the covers with the vignettes.
Overall this set is amazingly bright and clean. In detail, the stand has fine crazing to the glaze. The four covers have some crazing with staining underneath. All are missing part of the finials and one finial has been restuck. One cover has a corner missing and a hairline. The containers are crazed and stained, but somehow the glaze remains bright. Two side handles have been restuck and one is missing its top.
We can find no record of a similar set surviving, although two similar containers are illustrated on page 101 of Vol II of The Dictionary of Blue & White Pottery by Coysh and Henrywood and described as ornate open salt cellars.
This is a unique opportunity to acquire a rare and unusual set, which is both eye-catching and a sure-fire conversation piece.
