Maker: Handley  Pattern:Ponte Molle
Toilet Box c1825
This pattern is usually attributed to James & William Handley of Burslem and Hanley active 1819 to 1828. The Ponte Molle carries the Via Flaminia over the River Tiber about two miles from Rome and today is known as the Ponte Milvio. This particular view was taken from an engraving by Thomas Major made in 1753 and itself taken from an oil painting dating from 1645 Landscape near Rome with a View of the Ponte Molle by Claude Lorraine, which hangs in the Birmingham Art Gallery. The lid of this box has two glaze blemishes on the sides and a short hairline at one end. The box has four old rim chips and both pieces have finely crazed glaze. With the lid in place most of this is hidden and the box looks fine on display. No maker's backstamp.
Dimensions: 20 x 8.5 cm / 8 x 3.25 ins
