| Maker: Hales Hancock and Godwin Pattern:Watteau Vegetable Dish with Cover c1920 Beautiful flow blue dish and cover, round with panelled and fluted sides, with side loop handles. Decorated with the romantic Watteau design on the cover and the dish has the border design round the outside. Stands on four small feet.
Blue printed backstamp Watteau, HH&Co, England, which is for the London retailers Hales Hancock & Co, in business from 1918 to 1921, when they became Hales, Hancock & Godwin. They were sufficiently important to have their own backstamps, although the china was made by others.
In some reference books it is suggested that their Watteau was made by Doulton, but it was not. It was made by the Wood brothers at New Wharf Pottery, Burslem, which was absorbed into Wood & Sons in 1894 and many of the New Wharf designs continued in production. Hales and Woods had a close relationship.
The condition is excellent. Around the handles and finial there is some rough glaze and inside the dish a small firing crack, all occuring during manufacture. Lovely pearly glaze, all bright and sound, gorgeous display item.
