Dinner Plate c1825
Made by Thomas & Benjamin Godwin of New Basin Pottery, Burslem and subsequently New Wharf Pottery, Burslem active 1809 to 1834. Evocative scene depicting the River Thames with water traffic, bridges and St Pauls in the background. Backstamp: blue printed ribbon cartouche with VIEW OF LONDON. Provenance: The personal collection of Gresham Copeland, passing by descent to his son Robert Copeland. The glaze is crazed, but this is generally only noticeable on the back. The face is bright and and at 2 o'clock on the rim a rim chip 1.25" x 0.75" 3.5cm x 2cm has been professionally restored. On the back the the plate is generally a bit "grubby" through use and wear over the years. As a display piece it is fine.
