This scene is supposed to depict the Ladies of Llangollen out riding in the Llangollen Vale, but bears only passing resemblance to the landscape there. The Ladies were the Right Honourable Lady Eleanor Butler, daughter of the Marquis of Ormonde and Miss Sarah Ponsonby, daughter of Viscount Duncannon. They are said to have tired of Irish society and wished to set up home together, so in May 1778 they were provided with a small allowance and left Ireland for Llangollen in North Wales. They acquired a cottage there, which they converted and extended in the Gothic taste and named it Plas Newydd - the New Place. It still stands today and is open to the public. The Ladies became famed eccentrics attracting many notable visitors to their home. Lady Eleanor died in 1829 and Miss Sarah in 1831.
Backstamp: No maker's backstamp, only 14 impressed. The earlier items in this pattern are found printed in a dark blue and are well potted and printed and are believed to have come from the Glamorgan Pottery. Later examples in a lighter blue and not of the same quality came from Cambrian.
