Wash Bowl c1887
Made by John Heath Davis of Trent Pottery, Eastwood, Hanley, Staffordshire, active 1875 to 1891. This large bowl has a cream body and is decorated inside and out with scenic vignettes printed in black in the style of a Victorian pen and ink engraving. The same scenes appear on the inside and outside and are two seascapes of sailing boats before distant mountains on the shore; a river scene with bridge, sluice and watermill; and an angler in large rowing boat on a lake. There are four small vignettes of sailing boat, birds, blossom and a castle (Conway?). The rim is decorated with foliage and trellis work with gilt line decoration on the outer and inner rims.
The basin is round at the top, but the body is multi-scalloped enhancing its decorative appeal.
There is some light crazing to the glaze, with some wear and light staining inside, on the bottom, from use.
