Meat Dish or Platter c1825
By John Carey & Sons of Lane End, Staffordshire, active 1818-1828. After John died in 1828 the sons continued trading as Thomas & John Carey until 1842. This lovely scene is particularly notable for the reflected view of the mansion in the water of the lake. Audley End near Saffron Walden, England is a large Jacobean mansion begun in 1603 and later restored by Vanburgh in the 18th century. The figures and cattle in the foreground are taken from an engraving of Wanstead House, Essex in Grey's The Excursions through Essex (1818). The impressed backstamp is CAREY & SONS. Provenance the Otto Collection label with item number 834. In manufacture the transfer may have been torn resulting in a white line in the scene down from 1 o'clock and border at 4 o'clock was rubbed so the print is blurred. The glaze is finely crazed and there are a few signs of wear and use, but nothing of any note and it is remarkably free of utensil marks. Overall an attractive platter in excellent condition.
