Dessert Tureen and Stand c1835
Made by Brameld at the Rockingham Works, Swinton, Yorkshire and the full pattern name is Castle of Rochefort South of France. Rochefort is a French seaport on the Bay of Biscay and is perhaps best known as the port from which Napoleon sailed into exile in 1815. This open tureen on small footed stand is probably from a dessert service and may have been a cream tureen. It would appear to be a fairly late piece as the potting is rather chunky and the printing appears to be from well used plates. Attractive little set with dark blue embossed and open side handles on the tureen No maker's backstamp. The glaze is finely crazed. On the tureen there is a small chip to the rim and another couple to foot rim, plus a possible small star hairline to the body, which may be only in the glaze as it does not go through. One handle has a tiny rub or nick. On the stand there is a short hairline running in from the rim. All these are only apparent on close inspection and on display with its "best side" showing, it appears to be perfect. A rare set.
