Maker: Bailey  Pattern:Robin Hood
Mug c1850
A delightful small mug showing a scene from Sherwood Forest (presumably!) on one side and on the other "Robin Hood's Men Preparing Dinner". A similar mug is illustrated in Gifts for Good Children, printed in black with different scenes and noted as having no backstamp. However, another similar mug is recorded with a B&B garter backstamp, which suggests that Bailey & Ball of Stafford Street, Longton active 1843 to 1850 were the orginal makers. They were succeeded by John Bailey in his sole name until 1858. Backstamp: Garter mark with B in the centre and Robin Hood around the outside. Sadly this lovely little piece has suffered rather over the years. It is crazed with discolouration mainly inside and has some wear to the foot. There is a vertical hairline on one side of the body and a possible horizontal one to the other. Inspite of all this is an absolute delight!
Dimensions: 8 cm diameter, 8 cm high / 3.25 ins diameter, 3.25 ins high
